METHODIST CHURCH
ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. SOME EARLY HISTORY. The celebration of the anniversary of the Methodist Church tomorrow is a reminder of the early beginnings of the Church in Masterton. It was ’in January, 1855, that the late Mr H. Jones, known as the patriarch of Wairarapa Methodism, started a Sunday School in his own house, and two years later, a Wesleyan Church Society was formed, meeting at first in Mr Jones’ home, until a church was erected. Part of this old church still forms a portion of the present Sunday School buildings in Lincoln Road. In 1878 the new church was built and this building was enlarged in November, 1894, while considerable additions were made to the Sunday School and Bible Class Rooms. The church as it stands at present seats 350 persons and with its Sunday School and Bible Classes and numerous kindred societies is a hive of spiritual industry. With its historic old shingle roof and the many tablets adorning the walls inside, it is a reminder of early days in Masterton as well as a present appeal for the things beyond and greater than the material.
