MARTINBOROUGH

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. (“Times-Age” Special.) In “the absence of Mrs Lamb, Mrs McAlpine (vice-president) presided at the meeting of the Women’s Institute held yesterday. The speaker was Mrs Heke Boyd, of Gladstone, who sketched the history of early Martinborough Maoris. She was accorded a vote of thanks. Mrs Rowlands gave an interesting report of the Bush-Wairarapa Federation meeting held at Carterton on Friday last. Mrs S. Boyd demonstrated posy making to an interested audience, the finished article being present to Mrs O’Brien who is leaving the district. A similar honour was paid to Mrs E. Weber who will also leave Martinborough shortly.

The competition for the best laundered shirt was .won by Mrs I. Davidson with Mrs J. Wißon second. CARNIVAL BALL.

The Ball in aid of the Martinborough Queen in the Wairarapa .Catholic Queen Carnival was held in the Town Hall last evening. The hall was decorated in green and lemon shades and an orchestra provided the music. During an interval in the dancing Father Heavey spoke briefly on the success of the Carnival up to date, and thanked the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs W. B. Martin) for attending the ball.

The Mayor then introduced the four Queens. Miss Patricia Stewart (Martinborough Queen) wore a green lace dress, Miss Bouzaid (Greytown) was in gold satin, Miss McLeod (Featherston) in blue taffetas and the Carterton Queen in a scarlet lace dress. Each queen was presented with a bouquet. Mrs W. B. Martin, who was in a black gown with diamante trimmings, also received a bouquet. A novelty dance was won by Mr Eric McAlpine and Miss Jean Francis.’ SHOOTING ACCIDENT. A very unfortunate accident befell Mr Chas. Skill while he was out duck shooting on Wednesday when pellets from a shot entered one eye. It is understood that Mr Skill has lost the use of the eye. PERSONAL. Miss Linklater, of the West Coast, is visiting Mr and Mrs A. Brimble. Mr Gardiner, of Dunedin, is the guest of Mr and Mrs C. R. Holmes. Mrs W. McLeod is visiting Wellington. Mrs A. Winchcombe is a local visitor to Wellington.
