NEW BATHS WANTED
MASTERTON’S GREAT NEED. Special reference to the need of new and up-to-date public swimming baths in Masterton was made by Mr H. E. Pither, patron of the Masterton Swimming Club, at a club gathering on Wednesday night’ when trophies won during the year were presented. The lack of modern baths, Mr Pither said, was a severe handicap to a town of the size of Masterton. He referred to the splendid record of achievement by the club during the Learn to Swim Week, in which members took an active and successful part in teaching school children to swim.
Several Masterton schools now possess their own baths and the provision of these facilities has given excellent results. In some cases every pupil of a school is able to swim. At St. Matthew’s Collegiate School for Girls, where baths have been completed comparatively recently, girls of six who could not swim a stroke a few months ago are now able to swim the width of the baths.
