ASHBURTON MAN FINED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, April 29. Eight charges of having sold liquor without a licence preferred against James Weir resulted in a fine of £3O, with costs £4 5s on one charge and conviction and discharge on four charges. One was dismissed and two withdrawn. Police evidence stated that defendant was agent for an hotel at Rakaia. The licensee said the bottles and labels produced in court were not his. The police, on raiding the premises, found eight men there, all with liquor in glasses. One had been intoxicated. Among the liquor seized were 290 bottles and three jars of ale, also 160 empty ale bottles, and 10 drinking glasses. A constable said that between 1.25 and 4.10 o’clock he saw 35 men go in and 44 come out. One of the men found on the premises was fined 10s, with 10s costs. Others are to be charged later.
