WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING. LARGE GATHERING AT CARTERTON. Nearly 200 delegates are attending the annual council meeting of the Bush-Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institutes at Carterton. The State Theatre, where the conference is being held, was artistically decorated with autumn flowers and foliage by the Garden Circle of the Carterton Institute.'
The mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, who was accompanied by Mrs Taverner, Miss O. Wolters, hostess of the Carterton Institute, and Mrs J. D. C. Crewe, president of the Federation, combined in extending a warm welcome to the delegates. Posies made by the Garden Circle of the Carterton Institute were presented to Mesdames Crewe and Taverner, Miss Wolters and the secretary of the Council (Mrs R. C. Austin). Among those present were Mrs W. Deans, Dominion president of the Federation of Women's Institutes, who will address the conference this afternoon.
Mrs Austin gave a comprehensive survey of the activities of the past year, while a satisfactory balance sheet was submitted.
The conference is being continued this afternoon, when a playette will be presented by the Drama Circle of the Carterton Institute. Several remits will be discussed and officers elected for the ensuing year.
