AMERICAN PLANES
CONDITIONS OF PURCHASE BY BRITAIN DEFINITE RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED. QUICK DELIVERY ONLY OF STANDARD TYPES. NEW YORK, April 26. The British Commission, headed by Commodore Weir, arrived to negotiate purchases of American military aircraft, says the Washington correspondent of the “New York Times.” An Administration spokesman emphasised that the purchases will be governed by the same restrictions applying to all foreign purchases, despite frequent rumours of implied Anglo-American agreements involving extraordinary co-operation in the British rearmament programme.
The restrictions forbid the release of types of planes developed for the United States army and navy until six months after delivery of the first stock model for domestic service, which is often a year after the building of the experimental model. Thus Britain might obtain quick delivery of most of the standard planes, including the “flying fortress,” but if she wishes planes at present in the experimental stages, an order will be taken only for the indefinite future.
