His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral, Viscount Galway, accompanied by Lieut. S. le H. Lombard-Hobson, R.N., A.D.C., returned to Wellington yesterday from Christchurch. His Excellency presided over a meeting of the Executive Council at Parliament House during the morning, and later he received Sir Geoffrey Whiskard, British High Commissioner in Australia. His Excellency left for Auckland by the Limited express last night. Admiral J. G F. Harper left Wellington by the Awatea for Sydney last night after a holiday visit to the Dominion.
Mr C. E. Robertson, manager of the stud stock department of Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd., Wellington, returned by the Awatea yesterday from a business trip to Australia.
Mr S. K. Siddells, the deputy-mayor, is to contest the Pahiatua Mayoralty at the forthcoming elections. The present Mayor, Mr J. D. Wilson, recently announced that he did not intend to seek re-election.
Mr K. R. Johnston, pilot-instructor of the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club has resigned his position with the club and has accepted an appointment with Cook Strait Airways Ltd.
The Very Rev Father D. H. Hurley, S.M., provincial of the Society of Mary in New Zealand, and the Rev Father J. Spillane, of the Marist mission staff, Wellington, returned to Wellington by the Awatea yesterday from a visit to Australia.
The death occurred on Saturday evening at the Greytown Hospital of Mr Chris. Hatchard. Carrington, at the age of 59 years. Deceased had been in poor health for the past nine weeks and his death was not altogether unexpected. The late Mr Hatchard was born in Christchurch and worked for some years in the foundry trade. Later, coming to the North Island, he settled at Morison's Bush and was married some thirty years ago, his wife being Miss Ermie Svenson, a member of a pioneer family of the district. About twenty-five years ago he took a farm at Carrington, where he hyd resided ever since.
Mr R. D. Duxfleld, M.A.. J.P.. a prominent breeder of Shorthorn cattle and an exhibitor, died at his home at Horotiu yesterday, a Press Association message from Hamilton states. The late Mr Duxfleld was born at New-castle-on-Tyne, England, in 1862. and was educated at the Yarmouth Grammar School. He passed his preliminary law examination, and was articled for one year to a legal firm at Stock-ton-on Tecs. He later entered Dublin University and filled various teaching positions. Coming to New Zealand in 1885. he taught at Wanganui College, later going to the Whangarei High School .where he was principal for five years. Also, as a master, he was associated with Christs College, Chiistchurch. In 1898 he took up farmingin the Waikato, and took a prominent part in farming matters, being connected in an official capacity with the Farmers' Union for many years.
