PACIFIC ISLANDS

POSSIBLE CONDOMINIUM DISCUSSED. BRITAIN AND THE UNITED STATES. NEW YORK, April 14. The discussions between Britain and the United States concerning the sovereignty of Canton and Enderbury Islands are proceeding along the lines of a possible condominium, says the correspondent of the Australian Associated Press. No decision is expected for some time, but there will be no surprise if this is the final basis of settlement. The talks are most friendly. It is understood the United States emphasises that her interest in the islands is purely ’for civil aviation. Thus there is no reason why they should not share ownership. It is believed Australia is agreeable to the condominium idea, although this is not a brilliant success in the New Hebrides, where the position is complicated by racial and economic problems. These do no exist al Canton and Enderbury.
