DALADIER’S VICTORY
REGARDED AS REMARKABLE QUEER MEDLEY OF SUPPORT RIGHT AND LEFT WING PARTIES By Telegraph.—Press Association, Copyright. LONDON, April 14. The Paris correspondent of “The Times” considers M Daladier’s victory one of the most remarkable parliamentary performances of recent years. It satisfies everyone with the exception of the Socialists, who, not unjustly, feel they have been out-manoeuvr-ed. The parties rallying to M Daladier were not inspired by a common motive and therefore did not express national unity. The Socialists might have shown their spleen by absention from opposition if the Communists, with whom M Daladier is on good terms, had not announced their intention of supporting him, thus forcing the Socialists’ hands. The Right Wing took the view that the present Cabinet is beginning to shift from Left to Right. Other deputies supported M Daladier because they believe a strong line in the industrial field is necessary to prevent a grave emergency. The Government has a clear seven weeks in which to show its mettle before Parliament reassembles. The Bourse is explosively cheerful, yet the economic situation is unchanged. M Daladier’s proposals do not differ materially from his predecessors. They are inflationary and stand or fall by the capacity of the Government to borrow from the French investor. STRIKERS RESUMING. MINISTER’S PEACE PLAN ACCEPTED. (Recd This Day, 10.15 a.m.) PARIS, April 15. Over a hundred thousand strikers will resume work on Tuesday as a result of the Engineering and Metal Workers’ Unions accepting the peace plan of the Minister of Labour (M. Paul Ramadier). In a letter to the employers and workers, M. Ramadier said:—“ln the interest of national defence, it is the Government’s imperative duty to end tjae dispute.” The manner in which both sides have agreed to settle their grievances by conference promises a speedy settlement of the Paris labour troubles.
