LOCAL BODY POLLS

ELECTIONS IN THE WAIRARAPA DISTRICT VOTING TO TAKE PLACE ON MAY 11. BOROUGH AND COUNTY QUALIFICATIONS. Local body elections will be held throughout the Wairarapa on Wednesday. May 11. when voters will be called upon to select their representatives on borough and county councils, the Wairarapa Hospital Board, the Wairarapa Power Board and the Wairarapa district representatives on the Wellington Harbour Board. In all cases the term of office is for three years. Voters in Masterton borough will be asked to elect a Mayor, eleven councillors, three members on the Hospital Board, two on the Power Board and in common with the whole Wairarapa district, two representatives on the Wellington Harbour Board. Nominations will close on Wednesday, April 27, at noon.

The main borough rolls have already been compiled and the supplementary lists will close for enrolments on Wednesday, April 13 at 5 p.m. There are 2400 names on the residential roll and 3404 on the ratepayers’ roll, while it is expected that the supplementary lists will add a further 400 names. All persons residing in the borough, over 21 years of age and resident for at least twelve months in the Dominion and three months in Masterton borough are entitled to vote.

The present Mayor is Mr. T. Jordan and the councillors, Messrs R. Russell, A. D. Low, W. White, A. Rippon, W. H. Judd, J. Ninnes, N. T. B. W. Beetham. H. E. Gardner, A. T. Jackson, W. Kemp and G. D. Wilson. The borough representatives on the Hospital Board are Mrs S. Fletcher and Messrs N. T. B. W. Beetham and J. C. Ewington; on the Wairarapa Power Board Messrs H. P. Hugo and R. J. King. The district representatives on the Wellington Harbour Board are Messrs Hugh Morrison and T. R. Barrel'. x

In the case of the Masterton and other county councils only those who possess an occupiers’ qualification are entitled to vote. Voters are allowed to exercise their right for the election of a member for the riding in which they are enrolled as an occupier in the following scale: (a) If the rateable value of the rateable property, whether in one or more tenements aS appearing on the valuation roll is not more than £lOOO he is entitled to one vote; (b) if more than £lOOO and not more than £2OOO, two votes, and (c) more than £2OOO, three votes. For the election of Hospital Board, Power Board and Harbour Board representatives, however, a voter is entitled to one vote only in each case. The number of ratepayers entitled to vote in the respective ridings of Masterton County is as follows: Opaki, 294; Rangitumau. 102; Upper Taueru, 44; Te Whiti, 171; Uriti, 89; Wainuioru, 66. Seven councillors require to be elected for the Masterton County Council, the present members being Councillors H. H. Mawlcy (Rangitumau Riding), J. Donald (Upper Taueru), R. E. Gordon Lee (Te Whiti), G. Moore (Uriti), W. I. Armstrong (Wainuioru), J. W. Colquhoun and P. R. Welch (Opaki). Voters are also called upon to select three representatives for the combined district of Masterton and Castlepoint counties on the Wairarapa Hospital Board, the present members being Messrs H. H. Mawley, W. I. Armstrong and P. R. Welch and one representative on the Wairarapa Power Board for the Masterton County, the sitting member being Mr J. W. Colquhoun. It is understood that in the hase of the Masterton County nominations will be called on April 14 and will close on Friday, April 29, at noon.-
