BEAM BREAKS
AS LORRY CROSSES BRIDGE. DARGAVILLE, April 5. A major mishap occurred upon the Whangarei-Dargaville State highway about nine o'clock this morning. A lorry loaded with heavy machinery crossing the Uwakino bridge at the borough boundary broke the cross beams and the decking sank about six feet between the piers. The wooden construction has been known to be due for renewal for some years. There were three lorries carrying machinery. The first driver felt the bridge sinking, and the second truck, following close, could not pull up, so accelerated, and also got safely across, though a loaded trailer attached to it was thrown against the handrail, which it damaged for about 20 feet.
Traffic will be dislocated for two days.
