Max Schmeling has engaged in only 88 rounds of actual fighting in the past four years. He fought 35 rounds in 1934; 21 in 1935, 12 in 1936, 8 in 1937. In 1934, Schmeling lost a 12-round decision to Steve Hamas, drew in 15 with Uzcudun, and knocked out Neusel in eight. In 1935 he beat Hamas in a rematch in Germany in nine rounds, and won from Uzcudun in 12. In 1936 Schmeling stopped Louis in 12 rounds. In 1938 Schmeling knocked out Harry Thomas in eight and beat Ford in 12. Moira was staying at a farm for the rst time, was afraid of meeting a bull. “There’s nothing to be afraid of; that’s only a cow,” her mother said, as they went through a field. “Is it?”? asked Moira suspiciously. “Well, I don’t like the look of its handlebars.”
