NATIONAL WELFARE
MEETING OF MASTERTON LEAGUE. HOSPITAL AND SOCIAL WORK. The monthly meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held yesterday at the Midland Hotel. There were present: Mesdames H. E. Pither (in the chair), R. C. Drummond, A. W. McKenzie, S. L. P. Free, S. Fletcher, L. Hunter, A. Henderson, E. J. Coleman, H. P. Glen, G. G. Tolhurst, A. McCracken, Carruthers, Misses Guild, Beiliss, C. Cameron, Kummer and M. Boddington. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames T. Jordan, Latimer, G. H. Collie, W. McKenzie, A. Corskie, H. Brisco, F. Garland, S. J. Munn, H. P. Harrison, J. Caselberg, W. Andrew, Misses J. McLaren, M. Cameron and C. McCracken.
A letter expressing appreciation of the league’s gift of a box of clothes for the war ■in China was received from the Chinese Consul. It was stated that as the box would be forwarded on Friday all donors of parcels should forward same by Wednesday to the Two-Garment Room. Mrs Tolhurst was appointed to attend to the arrangements for a wreath on Anzac Day.
Miss Kummer reported on visits paid to the Masterton Hospital, including the consumption ward. Flowers, fish, biscuits, etc, had been distributed generally.
Mrs Pither was appointed hospital visitor for April, with power to arrange. for additional visitors. The hospital matron, Miss Barnett, warmly thanked all league members and friends for the beautiful bowls of flowers on the occasion of the opening of the new nurses’ home, also Mrs Scharnweber for making the bouquet which was presented to Lady Galway. It was reported that the teaching of handcrafts to crippled children had been recommenced. Miss C. MsCracken had been asked by the tuberculosis patients to give them lessons and this had been done, with the matron’s approval. A sum of £1 was voted to Miss McCracken towards the cost of material.
Mrs Pither reported on Institute for the Blind activities. It was decided to help a blind girl by the sale of work, mostly knitting. A letter was received from Sir Clutha Mackenzie asking the league to get in touch with any blind people and any persons knowing of a case of blindness, especially out of town, to communicate with Mrs Pither, phone 2001. Mrs Tolhurst reported on twelve cases visited during March in social welfare work. Clothing, milk and groceries had been distributed to those needing same. It was decided that Mrs Tolhurst give milk where required, especially to those recommended by" Nurse Kerins.
It was decided to visit the Buchanan Home on April 21. Cars will be loaned by Mesdames A. W..McKenzie, Pither and Glen,' Mrs Munn (convenor) to make the necessary arrangements.
Members were asked to note that biscuits were needed for the home.
As the annual meeting will be held on May 6, all nominations for the positions of president, secretary and treasurer must be in the hands of the secretary by April 22. Thanks were due to the following: Mesdames I. I. McGregor, Eric Jones, Allsop, and Misses Daken and Rose Robinson.
