TE AWAMOTU TOWN BOARD.

A meeting of the above Board was held at the Town Board offices yesterday afternoon.' There were present: —Messrs C. Bowden (chairman), G. If. White, S. Mathews, A. S. Wallace, and Dr. Reekie. A vote of sympathy was passed to the wife and family of the late Mr Wm. North. The chairman welcomed Dr. Reekie as a member of the Board. This was carried by acclamation. The minutes of the last meeting were duly read and confirmed. Dedication of Road. The taking over of the roads leading up to Mr Raikes’ property was further discussed. It was decided to await further information before doing anything definite. Footpaths in Teasdale Street and Alexandra Street. The contract tor these works have been let to Messrs Tickelpenny and Prescott. The work to be commenced at once. Roach Street. It was decided to sand the newly-formed portion of this road. Water Supply. Mr Wilson, civil engineer, wrote respecting water supply proposals. An estimate and further particulars will be sent for the consideration of the Board when certain particulars are available. Street Crossings. The question of permanent levels and a suggestion to form the road from kerb to kerb throughout the business portion of the town were discussed at length. It was ultimately resolved to hold the matter over for a few months. Permanent Levels.

It was resolved that the concrete kerbings in Sloane Street and Alexandra Street be recognised as the permanent levels. All other levels are to be taken from the levels defined by the Board.

A letter from Mr Chenery Suggatc, M.1.C.E., offering to define the permanent levels of the town, was received.

Survey Office at Te Awamutu

The Hon. the Minister for Lands wrote stating that the matter had been fully considered. It was pointed out that all the work of the district was done at Hamilton, so that, under the circumstances, the Department could not accede to the request of the Board. Proposed Gas Works.

J. W. Blackman wrote forwarding brief proposals for the installation of a coal gas works at Te Avvamutu. The proposals were that the Board give the sole right of lighting the public streets for fifteen years. The Board to have the right of taking over the v'*Tks at seven or fifteen years, and failing that the company to have the rights for a further fifteen years. In the event of the Board acquiring the property the price to be settled by arbitration. It was proposed to charge the following rates : —Ordinary lighting 10s, heating 7s 6d, power 6s Bd, Council charges 7s 6d per iooo cubic feet. The works to be started within six months from the signing of a contract, and the gas to be supplied within eighteen months. An office to be at all times established in the township. A subsequent letter from Mr Blackman asked for immediate action. In the event of the town installing the plant he offered his services to carry out the installation. Abbott’s Building. Mr H. Lenehan wrote on behalf of Mr Abbott asking for permission to remove a portion of the old building to the proper frontage, and to convert same into a shop. Considerable discussion ensued, and the Board adjourned to inspect the property. It was ultimately resolved that the Board could not consider the proposal to shift the building back, but were willing to consider plans for a new or re-constructed building.

Erection of Fence,

J. Johns asked for permission to erect a temporary fence on an unused road so as to assist in the clearing of noxious weeds. —-The application was granted. Crown Lands Board. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote saying that the proposal to hold meetings at Te Awamutu would be considered when the next year’s dates were being arranged. Public Cemetery. The following resolution was forwarded by the Chamber of Commerce :—“ That the matter of the opening of the new cemetery is a matter of pressing urgency,

and that this Chamber is of opinion that too much time has £ been lost in arriving at finality in this direction.” —It was decided to reply that the matter was in the hands of the surveyor and that the matter was receiving every consideration. Brick Area. The Chamber of Commerce wrote asking that the proposal to form a brick area be considered. It was—-decided that a reply be sent stating that the matter will be dealt with at a> special meeting. Public Urinal. The Chamber of Commerce wrote recommending the erection of a public urinal, and urging for proper convenience to be provided at the saleyards. —A reply to be sent that this matter has already been dealt with. Band Room. It was resolved to grant the Town Band permission to use the Band room erected at the saleyards subject to the conditions agreed upon. I Town Sections. It was resolved to place the leases of various town sections in the hands of Messrs Lawson and Swain for sale by public auction at the earliest possible date. This matter, together with the proposed brick area, to be further considered at a special meeting next Tuesday. Hall Chairs. Mr Warburton, on behalf of •Mrs Wm. Taylor and himself, again brought the proposal to purchase chairs for the local Town Hall, before the Board. After discussion it was decided to procure a chair of the selected design, and to submit same to the special meeting, to be held next Thursday. In this connection a concert will be held at an early date in order to meet the expenditure. WATER TABLES. It was reported that the water tables on the roacl near the pound required attention. The matter was left in the chairman’s hands. CROSSING. Leave was granted to Mr White to put in pipes, and form j a crossing at his entrance.
