OBITUARY.

Quite a gloom was cast over the district on Sunday when it became known that Mr Aubin Ahier had passed away daring the night. Some time ago Mr Ahier sustained internal injuries through a buggy accident, which eventually resulted in cancer. Hoping to effect a recovery, he was conveyed to the Waikato hospital, where he remained for some weeks. He was then brought to Te Awamutu, and has remained at the residence of his sister-in-law, Mrs E. I. Miller, until the time of his decease.- For some time no hope has been entertained of his recovery, and on Saturday it was quite evident that he would not live through the night, and whilst sleeping he passed away at about 2.45 a.m. The deceased was 57 years of age, and had for forty years resided at Pirongia. He was throughout his life closely identified with the progress of the district. In his earlier years he took a very active interest in sporting and municipal matters, and in these quarters his loss will be very marked. - As a pioneer settler there are few who settled under more adverse conditions than Mr Ahier, and it is to men of his stamp that -the settlement and progress of the district are largely due. On one occasion Mr Ahier was seiz ed by the Maoris and bound and carried from Pirongia in the direction of Te Awamutu, and mounted police had to be despatched to release him. Incidents of this nature made the life of. the pioneer settler anything but an enviable one, and we can ill afford to lose men of a stamp that come through such experiences. He leaves a widow, eight daughters, and one son. A Masonic funeral is being held at Pirongia this afternoon.
