OTOROHANGA.

(Own correspondent.)

The contractors have made good progress with the metalling of the Otorohanga-Te Kuiti Road, and expect to be finished very shortly now. They have taken an immense amount of metal from the bed of the Waipa River, but it has made no appreciable difference to the quantity there. With such a tremendous amount ol metal available all round the township it ought not to be an expensive proposition to- have all our main roads metalled. Residents are complaining that the main road will be just as muddy again as last winter, but I understand the Town Board intends to get to work on it right away. A large contract has just been let for forming the Pirongia Road, and a start has been made with the metalling of Poulson’s Hill. The settlers on the Hauturu Road have ‘ been advised that their £BOOO loan has been granted. Although late in the season- it is intended to proceed at once with as much of the work as possible before the winter really sets in. The heavy rain we have had during the past week has made a great difference to the country, and the new grass and clovers are sprouting well. The bulk of the grass seed around here has now been sown, but quail and pheasants are plentiful, and have been having a royal time. One or two settlers are trying poisoned clover seed this year, as quail are more partial to clover than to wheat.

Unfortunately the rain has come too latorfbr the dairy coy/s, aad our creamery is running only three days a week. Mr Baker, from Te Kuiti, has taken over the large billiard saloon formerly leased by Mr McColl. Another saddler has opened for business in Mr Cowley’s shop. What was formerly Mr Raynor’s workshop is being demolished. Older residents will be sorry to see this building go, but our business premises have to keep pace with the advancing township. I hear that a large shop is about to be erected beside the Union Bank, and Pouto is making a start with a shop and dining rooms on his section.

An enthusiastic meeting was held in Mr Hunter’s commercial room on Saturday, and it was decided to hold a concert at an early date to raise funds to fill in the big holes in Maniapoto Street, as they are dangerous as well as unsightly.
