A Mother’s Cruelty.
By Telegraph.—Press Association Feilding, Last Night.
A shocking case of cruelty to a child by her mother was heard before Mr A. D. Thomson, S.M., today. A girl 15 years old gave evidence, which was corroborated, stating that her ordinary working clothes were only a filthy nightdress and a tattered pinafore. The doctor who had examined the girl stated that she was literally covered with bruises. The girl had been frequently left without meals. Mrs Fogarty, mother of the girl, was not living with her husband, who was in Auckland. The Magistrate said the case was a most painful and shocking one, and it was almost incredible that a mother could have so neglected and abused her child. But for the fact that accused had small children, he would have sent her to prison.
A fine of £lO with £2 7s costs was inflicted.
