Alleged Criminal Assault.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, This Day. Richard Dyason, chief officer of the steamer Navua, appeared at the Police Court today to answer a charge of attempted criminal assault. Evidence was given by the alleged victim that accused attempted to persuade her to go on board the vessel on Sunday evening, March 29th, but on her refusing, he dragged her up the gangway, along the deck and up two flights of stairs to his room, where the attepmt was made. The girl contended that she was struggling and crying out the whole time, and that accused threatened to throw her overboard, if she did not keep quiet. One witness deposed that he saw a woman going in a friendly manner with an officer up to his cabin. Sergeant Ramsay said when arresting the accused he said that there must be a mistake, as he was visiting some friends at Devonport at that time on the day in question.
