The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd. report: — We held our usual monthly sale at Te Awamutu on Saturday. Calves were yarded in large numbers. For these there was good competition, and every pen sold at satisfactory prices. Fat cows and heifers made from £4 4s to £5 ss; store cows, £2 lis to £3 ss, according to condition; 18 months old steers, £2 10s; best calves, £1 3s to £1 ss; second quality, 19s to £1 Is; smaller sorts, 10s to 13s 6d. There was again a demand for weaner pigs at from 7s to lis; good slips, 18s to £l.

The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the followingcable, date London, April 4th:— Mutton : The market is very firm, with a better demand, but there is a scarcity of prime quality mutton. There is no change in prices. River Plate mutton is quoted at The lamb market is firm, with a better tone. Stocks on hand are light, and prospects for the sale of New Zealand lambs this season are good. Canterbury lamb is quoted at sgd; other than Canterbury, sgd. Beef: There is a better demand for beef, hindquarters being quoted at 3gd.; forequarters, 2gd. Butter: The market is firm, with improved demand, and supplies will be moderate. The following are current quotations: Choicest New Zealand, 110s; Danish, Ills; Australian, 107s; Siberian, 107s; Argentine, 108s.
Cheese: The market is quiet, but steady, and there is no change in prices. Hemp: The hemp market is steady, with an improved demand, but this is dependent on Manila reports. Following are current quotations: Good fair grade, on spot, £25 10s; fair grade, on spot, £23 10s; fair current Manila, £24 10s; April to June shipments, good fair grade, £25; failgrade £2 3 10s; fair current Manila, £24 10s. The stock of New Zealand hemp held in London amounts to 384 tons.
Cocksfoot: The market is firm, but there is less demand at 80s for bright, clean New Zealand seed, weighing 171b per bushel. In order to push sales of cocksfoot,'lower prices would have to be accepted. Following are the shipments from the River Plate during March: Mutton, London 38,366 carcases, Liverpool 81,076, Hull 8814, Newcastle 8225, Cardiff 1250, Plymouth 948. Lamb: London 2481 carcases, Liverpool 10,997, Hull 1077, Newcastle 1000, Cardiff nil, Plymouth 100. Butter: Liverpool and Southampton 8796cwt.
