FAREWELL TO MR AND MRS R. BURKE AND FAMILY.
O.v Monday evening last a farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs Richard Burke and family, of Ngaroto, who are about to leave the district after a residence of some '2j years. Them was a very large gathering of old friends ami settlers present. The affair took place in the Te Ralm School, and was in the farm of a social. During the evening Mr John Mandeno, on behalf of the settlers presented Mr Burke with a very handsome marble clock, be ring the following inscription : —" Presented to Richard Burke on the eve of his departure from Ngaroto as a memento of past good fellowship and au expression of future good wishes by his neighbours." In making the presentation, Mr Mandeno referred to the many good qualities of the recipient as a man and a neighbour. He was sure all present very much regretted his leaving the district, and trusted it would be for Irs good and that of his family, as it was certainly not for theirs. On behalf of Mrs Burke's many friends he had much plca*urfl in presenting her with a silver teapot, bearing the inscription, " Presented to Mrs Burke by her neighbours, Ngiroto," and he trusted that she would be long spared to enjoy good health and prosperity. Mr Burke, on rising to acknowledge the presentations, was received with applause. The presents, ho said, were truly a treat surprise to them, and he thanked the people one and all fur their kindness and Mr Mandeno for his kind remarks. It gave them great pleasure to see so many old friends present, and he could not express in words how thankful he felt. After the singing of " For he's a jolly good fellow " and cheers for Mr and Mis Burke and all the little Burkes, dancing was resumed. A sumptuous supper was pro vided by the ladies committee, Mesdames Cavanaph, Johns, Pollard. Dunne, and Turuey. The table, which looked very pretty, was niceiy draped with pinU anil green. It may be mentioned that Mr Burke has always taken a lively interest in anything appertaining to the welfare of the district, and was ever to the fore in furthering the dairying industry, and besides took an active part in local body matters, having been Chairman of the Racgiaohia Road Board for a number of years, and still holds oilice. We sincerely wish Mr and Mrs Burke, every happiness in their new heme.
