CABLE SUMMARY.
A number of Spanish officers who are being Court-martialled at Madrid on a charge of surrendering Santiago to the Americans, declared the town was defenceless, that the defenders were short of food, and three-fourths of them ill.
Mount Etna, in Sicily, which was recently in eruption, still continues active. It is reported that hot stones ejected from the crater pierced the iron cupola of the Observatory, which is situated on the mountain, and damaged the scientific instruments. In connection with some of the recent decisions affectiDg ritualism given by the Archbishops, many ritualists blame the Archbishops for yielding to outside opinion. Colonel Gordon, formerly commander of the South Australian Artillery, will continue to act as military adviser to the colonies until autumn, when he will return to England. The Emperor of Germany's yacht Meteor won the Royal Yacht Squadron's £IOOO prize. The Bona was second.
A New Caledoniau Coppet Mines Company has been formed with a capital of £750,000, the whole of which is to be issued. The company will work mines at Pilou and Ao.
Glasgow bowlers defeated the Auetra Han bowlers by 25 points.
