SHOOTING FATALITY.
(by telegraph—press association). Christchurch, Saturday. On Thursday afternoon Robert McFarland, manager until recently of the Ashburton branch of the Bank of New South Wales, was handling a pea-rifle, when it discharged, and he received a bullet in his head above the right ear. Since last Saturday he hid been an inmate of Dr. Stewart's private hospital for medical treatment, and during the week he had showed signs of mental distress, but did not cause any anxiety. It is supposed he loaded the rifle himself. McFaland died this morning. An inquest was held, and a verdict returned to the effect that death ensued from a rifle shot wound, self-infl ; cted, while deceased was suffering from temporary insanity, brought on through mental worry, consequent upon his suspension from the bank. The jury added a rider to the effect that carelessness was shown in leaving firearms within the reach of decked.
