METAMMEH IN DESOLATION.

Kitchener from Atbara, a transport train and a convoy has reached the advanced camp at Makawiyeh after four days' trying march through a devastated district. The Khalifa is determined to fight, and it is reported he is killing all the Jaolin tribesmen who are trying to desert him.

August 23. General Kitchener's force is now concentrated at Wady Harned. The health of the troops is excellent.

Metarameh is in a state of absolute desolation.

The streets are full of corpses and the houses are in ruins.

The Khalifa has been experimenting with submarine mines, and succeeded in blowing up one of his own steamers.
