TROOPS IN A DREADFUL STATE
CREMATING THE DEAD,
(Receiver! August 17, 11 am.). Washington, August 16. The embarkation of the Spanish troops from Santiago is being hurried. Their condition, owing to privation aud the fetid state of the city, is described as terrible. The dead are lying unburied in the streets. They are pUed in heaps, soaked with kerosene, and cremated. MANILA BOMBARDED. August 16. It was reported in New York that Manila had fallen, and this has since been confirmed. Before the news of the signing of the protocol had reaihed Admiral Dewey, he bombarded Manila on Saturday, and the town surrendered unconditionally. General Auguste, the Spanish Governor-General, fled in a launch belonging to a German vessel. He is returning to Madrid, and has arrived at Hongkong on board a German warship. (Received August 17, 9 '2oa.m.) Washington, August 16. Small damage has been done in the outskirts of Manila, which the Americans will occupy. Directly the white flag was hoisted Augusti jumped on to a German launch. DISBANDMENT OF CUBAN FORCES. Washington, August 16. A meeting of American and Cuban leaders, it is understood, has resolved upon the disbandment of the Cuban forces, the Americans guaranteeing their payment. FRANCE THANKED. Paris, August 15. Both the Spanish and American Governments have heartily thanked France for M. Cauibon's services in assisting to arrange peace. A LAST SHOT. Washington, August 15. On Saturday morning the Morro Castle fort at Havana fired upon Commodore Howell's flagship, the San Francisco, one shot hitting the vessel. The Americans did not retaliate, but sent a flag of truce, and communicated the fact that peace had been proclaimed. ADMIRAL CERVERA LIONISED. Washington, August 15. Admiral Cervera met with an enthusiastic reception on his arrival at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on board the warship Boston. Large crowds besieged the station, and hundreds, including many women, rushed and shook hands with the Spanish admiral.
