BANK ROBBERY.
(BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH—COPY RIGHT). (Received August 5, 9 12 a m.). Melbourne, August 5. Just before closing time yesterday a man drove to the branch of the Bank of Victoria at Penshurst and entered, and covering the Manager, Mr Jarnieson, with a revolver, gagged and bound him. The man then secured the keys of the strongroom and obtained over £6OO in notes and gold. He then got away. The robbery was discovered by an employee in the Post-office, who, looking through the window, saw a strange man in charge aud went to inform the police. In the meantime another man saw the robber leaving the bank, but was threatened with a revolver. The telegraph wires on both sides of the town wore cut previous to the robbery. A man, giving the name of John Ryan, tallying to the description of the robber, was arrested later at Ararat, with a revolver and a number of cartridges in his possession. A bag containing £SBB in gold and silver and £74 in notes was thrown from the carriage window just before the arrival of the train.
