CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The above Council met at 7.25 p.m. on Thursday, when it sat as a Burgess List Revision Court. There were present : His Worship the Mayor (Mr Bach), and Councillors T. Wells, H. Kerr, G. E. Clark, R. Davies, C. W. Arnold and J. Howe. The Clerk reported that no objections had been lodged against tho list as submitted, and it was thereupon certified to as correct, and was ordered to he signed by the Mayor and Councillors Wells and Clark. Cr. Wells complimented the valuer and clerk upon the manner in which the business had been conducted, and said it was pleasing to both Council aud burgesses not to have objections. His Worship endorsed Cr. Wells' remarks. ORDINARY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting was then held, the same members being present, and also the newly-elected members, Messrs Ferguson and Richardson, who took their seats after having made the usual declaration.—The Mayor welcomed the new members, and said he had not the slightest doubt but that they would prove an acquisition to the Council. They had both been members of it in former years, and the fact of their being returned unopposed showed the ratepayers were satisfied with their efforts on the former occasion. The Licensing Expenses.—An account for £l2 lis lOd was received from the Tauranga County Council, that being the Borough's share of the coats of administering the Licensing Act in the Bay of Plenty for the year ended 31st March, 1898.—0 r. Wells remarked that it amounted to £lO 9s 9d per cent, on the amounts received by the local bodies. He thought the sooner the licensing districts were made smaller the better it would be for all concerned. Acetylene Gas.—The Clerk reported the cost of installing acetylene gas in the Public Hall would be about £3O, which would include the cost of a shed to hold the generator. That would provide for 10 lights.—The Mayor did not think it would pay the Council, as the Hall was but little used. If the building was used say three nights a week it would pay well to have the gas.—Cr. Kerr said the Hall would be used if the floor was put in a good state.—As the Presbyterians had decided to use the gas, it was resolved to wait until they had given it a fair trial before deciding if it should be installed in the Public Hall, and the matter was deferred till next meeting. Committees. —Cr. Ferguson was put upon the Works, Finance and Cemetery Committees, and Cr. Richardson upon the Works and Finance. Financial Statement.—Overdraft at 14-th April, £67 9s 7d ; accounts since paid, £56 15s 9d ; amount lodged, £2B 19s 6d ; present overdraft, £95 9s lOd ; accounts to pass, £3O lis 8d ; overdraft when accounts are paid, £126 ls6d. Accounts.—The following were the accounts passed for payment : H. Preecc, £6 12s; D. Hickey, £1 15s ; H. Turnbull, 9s Id ; Waikato Arous, 6s 9d; Tauranga County Council, £l2 lis lOd ; .J. S. Bond, £4 lis; J. Ferguson, lis ; total, £3O lis Bd. Works.—The works report merely gave the work executed by the surfaceman during the month, and did not contain any recommendations. Tenders For Gravelling.—Only three tenders were received for the gravelling of the borough to 31st March next, namely—C. Crouch, 10£d per yard ; J. Harris, 10id ; T. Wattam and Co., 10d.--0n the motion of Cr. Howe, seconded by Cr. Davies, the tender of T. Wattam and Co. was accepted. The Rate.—A rate of Is in the £ was struck. It will be payable at the borough office on the first day of June next. Bicycles.—The Mayor said several accidents had occurred through bicycles being ridden through the streets at night without having the very necessary lighted lamps. He moved : That the attention of the police be called to the fact that a number of bicycles are ridden about the streets after dark without having lighted lamps attached to them, and ask them to enforce the by-law relating thereto. Kerbing.—Cr. Howe asked if anything had been done regarding using concrete for kerbing. From enquiries he had made he judged it would not do, for if a cart was backed sigainst it in frosty weather it would easily be broken.—Cr. Wells said down South he had seen whole towns with nothing else used for kerbing, and they had a considerable amount of frost down there. He was certain it would do, but it was the mat ter of cost that they would have to consider.—'The Mayor said he had made enquiries, and he thought it would not do without they used a certain proportion of cement with the lime. He should like to try, say, about a chain of kerbing in concrete made with cement, and then they would have something to go upon. —Eventually it was decided to defer the matter till more infermation has been obtained. Public Hall.—Cr. Kerr stated the hall would be used much more than it was at the present time if the floor was planed.—After some discussion the matter was referred to the Hall Committee, with power to act. This concluded the business.
