At the inquest on the Maitland victims, Captain Skinner stated that he had been in the service of the company twenty-three years, and had made the trip to Nowcastlo eight thousand times, This was his first mishap and occurred in the worst weather he had ever experienced. It would havo been cert6in perdition to have tried to approach the coast. Sydney, May 13. TllE Newcastle and Hunter River Company will present Russell, the hero of the Maitland disaster, with a gold watch and chain, and a free pass on their steamers for life, in recognition of his bravery. i
