SAD DEATH OF A GUMDIGGER.

(dy telegraph.—press association). Paeroa, Last Night. William Murray, a single old man, aged 56 years, was found dead on Saturday near the Waipahake Creek, six miles from Martoto. Murray was a gumdigger, living in a tent alone. About the 20th April some Maoris and other diggers noticed Murray’s tent unoccupied. They searched the place, but could find no trace of the missing man. Last Friday they informed the police at Paeroa. Sergeant Brennan sent Constable Connor out on Saturday morning to assist in the search party. They found the old man dead lying crushed under the stump of a large tree. He had evidently been digging round the roots when the tree slipped down, jamming him under it against another tree. At the inquest a verdict was returned to the effect that deceased was found dead.
