Menzies, Little River, deposed that he had lost 750 out of 2000 sheep two years ago. Inspeetor Broham told him that the detective force was at a low ebb, but he would do his best, and witness believed the Inspector diJ. A man employed to detect sheep-stealers should be a specialist, as the average policeman had no knowledge of sheep. The stealing of cattle and sheep took place every autumu. John Roudall, who formerly had a cattle station at Akaroa, deposed that he had lost a mob of cattle three years ago. Inspector Broham took all the steps he could to discover the thief. W. B. Clark son said he considered sheep-stealing on the Peninsular could be stopped if the constables at Little River were instructed to detain sheep unless provided with a pass.
