PROPOSED NEW ROAD TO RAGLAN.
The following petition has been numerously tigncd in the Raglan County, and will, we understand, be forwarded to the Minister for Lands by Mr F. W. Lang, M.H.R. :-
To the Hon. J. MoKenzie, Minister of Lands, Wellington. Sir,—We, the undersigned, settlers and landowners in the Raglan County, Auckland, wish to draw your attention to the great disadvantages and loss wc have to endure from having to cart our stores and drive our produce over the range of mountains between Waitetuna and'Whatawhata by the present main road. This road was made some years ago, but was not properly graded, and was carried over one of the highest ridges of the mountain. It is practically closed for all wheeled traffic for the five winter months, and no matter what sums of money are spent on it can never be made a detirable road. Mr Viokerman, your surveyor, having been instructed by the Auckland Laud Office to report on a deviati -a over tho mountain, having reported iu favour of a road being taken through Mr E. Breckon's and the University Endowment Lands, coming out by the Whatawhata Bridge, whereby the d stance will be considerably shortened and a good grade obtained, we, the undersigned, settlers and laudowudrs of this district, request that you cause a sum of money to be placed upon the Estimates for the making of this road, and instructions given to have the road opened for traffic with as little delay as possible.
