A STRIKE.

(UY TELKGRAPn—OWN CORRESPONDENT).

Auckland, Last Night. A STRIKE occurred this morning amongst the pick and shovel men employed on Fallon's contract at the cutting down works in the Gas Company's property at Freeman's Bny. About 20 men out of the 28 or 30 employed there ■' struck " for higher wages, and knocked off work on their demand being declined. Mr Fallon was paying 6a a day to shove) men and 6a (id a day to pick men. One of the grounds of complaint was that, Mr Fallon deducted 6d in the £ from all wages for insurance of the men from accident. Work was suspended at the cutting down operations to-day on aesount of the strike. Mr Fallon states the deductions were made known to the men tefoie they were employed.
