THE INQUIRY
(1)1 TKLEOEAPn.—OWN CORRESPONDENT). Auckland, List Night. An inquiry was commenced to-day into the fire which destroyed seven buildings in Ponsonby recently. laido.e Mendel, tobacconist, hairdresser and billiardroom-keepcr, in whose piemises the fire started, was examined. Ha said his stock was insured for £l7O. Cross-examined, Mendel said his only creditor was L. D. Nathan and Co., to whom ho owed £72. After getting his insurance money and paying Messrs Nathan and Co. he would he about £IOO to the good. He had a fire in Wellington in 18S7 or 18SS, when he was in a similar business. Ho had an insurance of £350 or £JOO then. He came to Auckland last year. He had a burglary at his place in Auckland last August. Fie lost £ls worth of goods thereby. He did not know that a suggestion had been made that no burglary had taken place. Owing to competition the profits in the hairdressing and tobacconist branches were small. The inquiry was adjourned.
