The following is a copy of the report and balance-sheet for the year ending 1897, to be submitted to the general meeting of subscribers, to be held in the Reading-room next week. Report —Your committee are again pleased to be able to report that the Library has been fairly well supported during the past year, and that the finances arc in a healthy condition. The total number of subscribers during the year was 69, and the number remaining at the end of the ycai. 51. The number of books taken out during the year was 3327, as compared with 3256 eluringlß96. Ordinary subscriptions received about equal those of the preceding year. A lecture delivered in May last by the Rev. J. M. Mitchell, of Hamilton, in aid of the funds netted £2 14s, and the -public entertainment in June last, £lO. The total re:eipts from all sources during the year were £54 lis 6d, as compared with £4O lis 9d in 1596. A number of new books has been added, the total number of works now shelved being 1162. Your committee have been arranging for replacing with suitable editions those favourite works of standard authors that have been worn out or are mi«sing from the Ehelves, but this work is not yet completed. The Reading-room has continued to be well attended, a larger number of Magazines has been supplied, and the expenditure under this head is proportionately increased. The total expenditure for the year was £4O 19< Id, leaving a credit balance in hand on 31st December, 1897, of £l3 12s sd.
