CABLE PROPOSALS.

Ottawa, December 31. Mr Sandford Fleming is urging Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the Canadian Premier, to proceed with the construction of the Pacific cable. [London, January 1. A. British committee has been appointed to consider the cable suggested in lieu of the proposed Pacific cable from Fremantle, in Western Australia, via Diego Garcia (the principal island of the Chagos Group, in the Indian Ocean), Mauritius, and thence to the Cape. The committee are awaiting the appointment of Australian nominees. Mr Chamberlain has expressel himself favourable to Cape Colony subsidising a deep-sea cable to England, via Ascension, St. Helena and West Africa, in preference to the proposed Jubilee gift of a battleship to the Imperial navy.
