A VALUABLE DISCOVERY.
THE MEALY BUG PARASITE.
(liY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT). Auckland, Last Night. On Tuesday night the Govermeut Ento mologist, takes a considerable number of the parasite of the mealy bug to Whangarei, so that the little four winged fly may bo set to work there. A large box is packed ready for the Department at Wellington. It contains a lot of vine canes, tern leaves, etc., stocked with impregnated mealy bugs, in addition to many recently hatched out flies. In each of two greenhouses, belonging to the nursery gardens, near Auckland, 50 parasites of the mealy hugs have been safely located ; 20 more have been placed in a private greenhouse at Mount Eden ; and 00 ill another place at Epsom. Quito a number of these active little flies have now been reared from the mealy bui»s preserved in glass boxes. As this valuable discovery was made only on the sth January, we have ample proof, if needed, what science and energy can accomplish for our pestered fruit growers.
