THE ACID-THROWINC CASE.
CARROLL ARRESTED. Sydney, January 28. In consequence of information received from tho New Zealand police, a bright look oiu has been kept here for the man Thomas Carroll, charged with having thrown vitriol over Robert Jewell at Paeroa on the 20th inst. It was supposed that he might have eluded the police between Auckland and Wellington and gone on to Sydney by the Uuiou Company's s.s. Mararoa on the 23rd inst. This proved to be a correct surmise. On arrival of the Mararoa from Wellington direct last night, Detectives Jones and Fullerton proceeded on board, and as the result of inquiries identified one of the passengers as Thomas Carroll, and charged him with throwing vitriol at Paeroa. The clothes worn by Carroll did not correspond with those described as worn by him wheu last seen in New Zealand, but it transpired that during the voyage he had changed clothes with another man, and also took his name for a small monetary consideration. Carroll at first denied his identity, but when confronted with the evidence in the possession of the detectives admitted that lie was the man for whom the warrant had been issued. The accused subsequently admitted that he threw vitriol at Paeroa, but alleged that he did so because Jewell diew a re'-otver.
