CABLE SUMMARY.
General Huttox, ex-Commandant of the New South Wales Forces, is announced to give a lecture at Aldershot to his comrades, on " Greater Britain." The Duke of Connaught will preside. The report of the English and Scottish Bank shows a total debit of £34,225. The directors state that by the Act passed in IS9G this becomes a capital charge to the contingent fund created under arrangement in 189,'i. Under the Act of 1596, the interest payable on the bank's securities was reduced more than sufficient to cover the debit balance, the cumulative principal was abolished, and provision made for a reserve fund. New business continues satisfactory. The Russiin Government propose to expend eight million roubles on the navy during next decade. The Niagara Falls are being utilised as motor power for electric lighting and street conveyance in Buffalo. The Daily Telegraph says Elvera, daughter of Dom Carlos, King of Portugal, has eloped with Count Folchi, an Italian painter, carrying with her £12,000 worth of jewels. The Dominion liner Memphis stranded on the coast of Ireland. Ten of those on board were drowned, and thirty-seven rescued. A syndicate has acquired a number of butchers' shops in London and Liverpool at a cost of half-a-million. Belgium proposes to license a gambling house for half a million francs per annum, and a tax of 700 francs per member. British railway men have demanded that the hours of labour for guards and brakesmen be limited to ten hours a day, and for shunters eight hours. Professor Davidson, of New College, has been elected Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland. The Armenian Bishop of Arraash hiis been appointed Armenian Patriarch. Mr D. William Maloney, of Melbourne, gave a public exhibition in Edinburgh, of electrical treatment of diseases. Students noisily protested against what they regarlcd as a breach of university etiquette, and the police had to be summoned, whereupon the students left. They afterwards pelted Maloney's house. The Ontario Law Society has admilted women to practice at the bar.
