MEETING TO DISCUSS WAIKUNE PRISON FUTURE

Members of the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board meet with Justice Department Officials this Thursday to discuss the board's plans for the Waikune Prison complex and its future. The meeting follows a visit to the prison complex by representatives of both parties on Tuesday last week.

At this stage the interim order halting the prison buildings removal work still stands. The order was sought by the trust board when the removal and demolition work began in late November last year. The trust has a claim for land which includes part of the prison area before the Waitangi Tribunal and also has put forward a proposal to use the complex for a training centre for school leavers and young Maoris.
