SCOUTS GET GREEN LIGHT FOR SKI LODGE
Ruapehu Scout Group's application to build a 24 bed lodge on their Lee Street, Ohakune property was approved at last week's Waimarino District Council Town Planning hearing. One objection to the application was lodged, which was on the grounds that the present Scout Hall was unsightly. One of the conditions imposed in approving the application was that the hall be painted. Mr Mike Fetzer, representing the group, said the group planned to paint the hall this summer. Other conditions imposed included the setting of a bond to cover the forming and sealing of a driveway to the new lodge. Councillors Errol Sue and Doug Bennett opposed the application. They said granting it' would open the doors to any social club who wanted to build a lodge in a residential zone. Cr Sue said it was a "Boy Scout motel" and that it would take away business from motels. Cr Gould supported the application, emphasizing that only scouts would use the lodge and that it was surrounded by ski chalets. Cr Thompson supported the Scouts, saying through the Scout's national organisation problems would be easily controlled.
