WANGANUI RIVER USERS WON'T PAY INCREASE

Last week commercial Wanganui River jet boat and canoe operators decided they wouldn't pay the increase in their licence fees until the Department of Conservation has justified the rises. Sixteen operators met at Raetihi last Monday to discuss the rises, which would see a canoe operator's licence rise from $5 to $100 and a commercial vessel operator pay $150, up from $5. DoC has said they have increased the fees to put an end to "fly-by-night" operators who set up business for the busy summer months then disappear, having "creamed off the profits". Senior Conservator John Lythgoe is reported to be disappointed at the operator's stand, though understanding of why they wish to avoid paying the increase.
