LOCAL GOVT REFORM MEETINGS FOR PUBLIC
Two public meetings are to be held this month to gauge the feeling of Waimarino residents on the impending local government reform. The council is to hold the meetings to hear public views on the future of local government in this area, before formulating a submission to the Local Government Commission. Tuesday August 23 is the date set for a Raetihi meeting and Wednesday 24 for an Ohakune meeting, prior to the monthly full council meeting. In setting the dates at Wednesday's committee meetings some councillors expressed doubt that any members of the public would be interested, but Mayor Garry Workman said the public should be given the opportunity to have a say. Councillor Frew said most people she spoke to were "a little jaded" on the subject of amalgamation so soon after the formation of the Waimarino District Council.
