College team one win from top

The Ruapehu College Soccer Team are one more step towards winning the "Furniture House League", after beating the top team Taumaranui B by 2-0 last Sunday. The same side beat Ruapehu 10-1 at the

beginning of the season, but Sunday's result came as no surprise to player/coach John McCartney. "They shouldn't have beaten us then, and they certain didn't beat us this time round. We didn't have a full team at the start of the season but after gaining a

few experienced players we've come from bottom to top." The College team are now one point off the top of the table with a game in hand. Sunday's victory was due to goals from Jason Langdon and Peter Samson. The first goal came after eight min-

utes when Junior Kaata on the left side put over a high cross to the far post. Jason Langdon rushed in to slide the ball past Taumaranui's stranded keeper. Ruapehu kept up the pressure with a number of shots, then Captain Brendan Gammeter

passed the ball inside the area to Peter Samson who was waiting on the left. His accurate shot passed between the diving keeper and the post for the College's second, adding to the tally for the up and coming fourth former. John Greenwood played another good game at right back but was substituted at half time for Duane Dixon who came on at left back. Taumaranui applied more pressure in the second half, gaining seven corners in the 45 minutes. College stand-in keeper Keir Whipp pulled off an excellent save from an indirect free-kick in his own penalty area. Taumaranui's number 8 curved a short around the defending wall and was a sure goal until the keeper 's reflex dive prevented the ball from crossing the goal line. The game ended as one of the most exciting of the season and Ruapehu now have to overcome second placed Turangi to make sure of the title.
