OK backs defy conditions

Ohakune Karioi Senior rugby team tuned their most commanding performance o n Saturday in their encounter with Hunterville a t Rochfort Park, Ohakune. They score six tries to Hunterville's two. The Ohakune Karioi team fielded its first choice forward pack with the return of the regular front row. They had Hunterville reeling from kick off

with brilliant ball handling and good mauling. Ohakune Karioi showed their best form for the 1988 season. It seemed the backs were not told that it was a wet muddy ground because they played open, running and enterprising rugby. They had the Hunterville backs in much disarray. Ohakune Karioi sometimes made 50-60 metres with just basic back line passing. On one occasion Brendon Wilson ran 50 metres to score under t h e

posts. The forward's performance was quite outstanding. With a little more fine tuning they could match or even better Wanganui High School Old Boys' pack next week. With support and back-up play between forwards and backs another good try was scored when Whetu Mareikura kicked a high ball down field. Hunterville let the ball bounce which allowed Kellich Harding to pick it up and score near the posts.

Final score was Ohakune Karioi 33, Hunterville 12. The two wingers Harry Mathews and Glen Brennan were impressive, showing a lot of flair. Glen on two occasions saved tries. Harry Mathews, psyched up on his 19 th birthday, played the best game of his season. He was named player of the day. Charles Mareikura was sound at full back. The loose forwards Richard Mathews, Steve Cameron and Kellich Harding showed much skill.

For Hunterville Boy Manunui did a lot of work scoring all 12 points for Hunterville. R. Darrgh was named Hunterville player o f the day. Ohakune Karioi meet WHSOB next week at Ohakune 2.45pm. This will be the last chance to see this much improved team play at Ohakune this season. The two remaining games after Saturday will be in Taihape and Marton.
