JUNCTION STATION PLATFORM CRITICIZED

Deputy Mayor Bruce Thompson advised the District Council at a recent meeting that he thought the Ohakune Junction Railway Station platform was in need of repair. He told the council he met the recent inaugural Kiwi Lager Ski Express train and was not impressed with the state of the platform and driveway to the station. The council heard that Railways was responsible for the maintenance of the driveway as well as the platform. Earlier council had an agreement with Railways that it would maintain the driveway in return for access from Thames Street to the bridge across the line to Railway Row. The bridge has now been removed by Railways. "We wrote to Railways asking for something to be done about the driveway and from what I can gather we didn't even get a reply," said Mr Thompson. The deputy mayor suggested the upcoming electrification ceremony could be an opportunity for the council to point out to railways that during the coming winter a train with up to 500 people would be arriving at the station each weekend and that their first impression of the town would be from of the state of the station.
