IMAGE-BUILDING TAUMARUNUI STYLE

If you watch carefully next time you drive into Taumarunui, you'll notice a severe case of megalomania. It's in the form of what can only be a Think Big campaign. As you approach the town from the south you come across a big hoarding saying "Welcome to Taumarunui." That's OK. Except you then come to another sign which says "Taumarunui 6km". And you proceed to drive through the country for another lkm before a limited speed zone sign confirms that you're approaching a built up area. What's wrong is that the signs give you the impression you're in the town when, of course, you're not. Perhaps it's a case of wishful thinking on the part of the town fathers.
