Who is Renee?

WHO IS RENEE? The sign that has appeared in shop windows around Ohakune, along with several others just as mysterious, is the key to this year's annual production organised by Ohakune shop owner Yai Parkes "with a lot of help from her friends." After the success of last year's soirce a decision was made to hold a show every year. Productions have been held every year since 1984, when a combined exhibition of ceramics, I hungarian embroidery and

photography was shown at the Lion's Den. This was followed in 1985 by an exhibition of local handcrafts and last year, a soiree with a 1900 to 1930's theme. This year's production promises to be exceptional, with the romance and mystery of France being the theme, complete with a sidewalk cafe and french waitresses. The show is to be held at the Ohakune Club on 31 May. Tickets to enter 'Renee's Cafe' will be the same price as last year. Fifteen dollars covers drinks, a selection of finger foods and the night's entertainment, which includes acts by local artists and personalities. Organiser Val Parkes said some of the artists of last year have indicated they will perform again, while the show will also include some brand new acts never before seen in the Southem Hemisphere! One such performance will be by a two womanone man revue, who will make their debut on the night. Also booked to perform are dancers from the Joy Wilson School of Dance.

"The Waimarino has such a huge amount of talent to offer," said Mrs Parkes. Mrs Parkes said an undisclosed number of acts will be following the French theme which should prove to be highly entertaining. Dress for the evening will be in accordance with the theme. This leaves the choice of costume wide open for individual interpretation. They may include Jacques Cousteau look-alikes, Rainbow Warrior bombers, chefs, artists or madamoiselles of the night. The proceeds of the show will again be going to DEBRA, the organisation involved in research into 'cotton wool' babies and treatment of Epidermolysis Bullosa, a skin condition which causes much suffering for those children affected by it. Mrs Parkes said that anyone willing to contribute time and effort to help with the show or would like more information, can contact her or any of the production committee- Trish Vanstone, Bill TeKaru, Elwyn Costello or Norma Cranston.
