Letters to the Editor

"Exactly" Give Credit, Where Credit is Due! In reply to the letter in the last Bulletin, we are appalled at the implications of this letter, pertaining to the work of the previous School Committee. Firstly, credit was given to the right people. In fact the right people were the only ones to turn up at the working bees' which were arranged by the previous School Committee to be held on the first weekend of each month. Admittedly the installation of the swimming pool did take two years, owing to a lack of parental attendance at these working bee's. Perhaps some parents don't read newsletters sent home. Some of the achievements of the past two years not

mentioned in the ungrateful parents' letter are as follows: — 'Children' signs at entrances to Rangataua; approval and funding for refurbishing of library; refencing of road frontage; repainting of school playground equipment; months of replenishing firewood; demolition of old car shed; application and approval for new P.E. and implement shed; resealing of school driveway and parking area. Not only did we fulfil the above, we had shop days, raffles and full support was given to the Principal in every way possible. We acknowledge the work performed by the Principal and students, and commend them highly. We feel that the involvement of students in their school is.

and will be of benefit to them, by not only giving them a sense of pride in their school, but also the community. Rangataua School parents (some) No nom-de-plume During the past few weeks I have been irritated by writers to this column declaring their opinions with conviction, only to undersign their letters with a nom-de-plume. Writers of letters to a public column directing criticism and comments at individuals or groups in the community ought surely to have the courage to sign their names. To sound off among friends who hold likeminded views is easy, to stand publicly, where those views are open to discussion and contention requires considerable more strength of character. For goodness sake give your name — or else keep it to vourself.

In Reply to 'Grateful Parents' The chairman's report is on school activities over the past two years, not on just the School Committees. If my report was listened to you would have heard that the tree planting, etc., came under the heading of projects completed and, rereading my notes, neither was the School Committee thanked. The swimming pool would have been completed earlier if grateful parents had turned up to help at working bees and do some of the dirty work. Our objectives as a School Committee are to work for the good of the school and not to act as a mutual admiration society. If someone feels their ego needs individual accolades please let me know.

Johr,

i Breen

(Past Chairman Rangataua School Committee)
