Climbing on the run
The record for the fastest climb of the four summits — Ruapehu, Taranaki (Egmont), Tongariro and Ngauruhoe, has been broken by two Taranaki mountaineers. Ian McAlpine and Dave Wills, both of New Plymouth, knocked nearly five hours off the previous record set by Ray O'Brien of National Park in 1974. The pair started their effort at 7.30pm on Friday 6 March climbing Mt Taranaki in two hours. They took about an hour to return, then drove to Tonga-
riro National Park and climbed Mt Ruapehu, taking three hours to conquer the highest of the four. They jogged cross-country to Ngauruhoe, then climbed the scree slopes in about an hour and three quarters. Mt Tongariro was last and took 35 minutes to climb. The two finished their attempt on the Saturday, 20 hOurs 57 minutes after they started. The drive from Taranaki to the Central Plateau took them four hours. Ray O'Brien used a helicopter for the trip from park to park during his attempt in 1974.
