Fire Hazard

A combination of fine weather and hot dry easterly winds has left much of the North Island of New Zealand in a near drought situation. No better off is the Pipiriki and Wanganui River area where the fire danger level has ranged from high to extreme over the past week. Senior Ranger at Pipiriki John Lythgoe cautions campers and visitors to the area to be extremely careful when lighting fires, especially those tramping in the Mangapurua Valley where the condition is critical. Mr Lythgoe said people should make sure their fires are extinguished completely before leaving a camping site.
