Non-urgent cases cut
Shortage of junior doctors has meant that Wanganui Base Hospital has had to restrict services to non-urgent cases. From yesterday Monday 7 July 1986 the Emergency Unit at the hospital will treat only those people with lifethreatening emergency conditions after 5pm on weekdays and at weekends. During the present shortage of junior hospital doctors, attention to patients in the Emergency Unit will mean the doctor leaving his ward duties. This will only be done for life threatening emergencies only.
Patients with less urgent conditions should contact their own general practitioner or the duty general practitioner. People who insist on attending the Emergency Unit with non-life threatening conditions will be asked to wait until the ward doctor is free from ward calls. This may take a long time. Patients will then be checked, but those whose conditions are not threatening life will be referred to their general practitioner for further investigation and treatment.
